08 Mar 24 Celebrating Women's Leadership in the Maritime Industry (P&O Ferries) Laura Gilmour is a Cluster Port Director for the Irish Sea at P&O Ferries. Read below her blog where she shares her experience in the industry. BackgroundIn 1987, I embarked on my journey with P&O Ferries as a Tourist Check-in Clerk. Fast forward to 2024, and I proudly hold the position of Cluster Ports Director for the Irish Sea, overseeing operations across four Ports I manage. My career has been a testament to perseverance, resilience, and the unwavering support of my colleagues.Working in a predominantly male environment posed its challenges, but I was fortunate to have the backing of many male colleagues who championed my growth. Trust and collaboration became the cornerstone of our working relationships. Whenever I faced challenges, I had to remind myself to believe in my capabilities to overcome them.Career ProgressionThroughout the years, I've witnessed significant milestones, from being appointed as the first Female Port Manager in Larne in 2014 to achieving Chartered Manager status in 2016. These moments serve as reminders of how far we've come but also highlight the work that still lies ahead. As we celebrate International Women's Day, we must reflect on the progress made and the path ahead. While strides have been taken to increase female representation in leadership roles, there's still much ground to cover. At P&O Ferries, we've seen a rise in the number of women in senior positions. Yet, our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment extends beyond numbers.Inspiring WomenWe must inspire women from all walks of life to envision themselves in leadership positions, regardless of their qualifications or experience. Investing in continuous learning, mentorship programmes, and on-the-job opportunities are crucial in nurturing the next generation of female leaders. As we navigate the waters of change, let us seize this moment to reaffirm our commitment to gender equality and empowerment in the maritime industry. Together, we can chart a course towards a future where every woman can thrive and succeed. Happy International Women's Day!Learn more about our member, P&O Ferries. Share:
