ORCA | Ship Strike Mitigation Workshop

The UK Chamber of Shipping is pleased to announce a Ship Strike Mitigation Workshop in partnership with the NGO ORCA on Tuesday 7 May from 14:00 to 15:30. The workshop will be held at the International Chamber of Shipping Offices, with online participation available. The interactive session, led by ORCA’s Chief Executive, Sally Hamilton, and Director of Fundraising and Operations, Steve Jones, will provide an overview of the current ship strike risk landscape and outline best practice mitigation approaches.

The aim is to open a constructive dialogue with shipping operators, creating a safe and confidential space to share experiences of vessel strikes or near misses and reflect on the practicalities of implementing measures such as speed reductions or rerouting. ORCA is seeking feedback from industry to help inform their contributions to expert policy discussions, including at the International Whaling Commission.

The workshop is open to all members but may be of particular interest to those involved in navigational planning, safety management, or environmental compliance.

Sailors' Society | New support for female seafarers

While only a tiny percentage of the global seafaring workforce is female, they face unique challenges at sea.

But thanks to international maritime welfare charity Sailors’ Society, specific support for female seafarers is now readily available.

Its new female helpline, funded by Skuld, lets female seafarers choose to talk with a female member of Sailors’ Society’s team of trained responders.

CEO Sara Baade said: “This is another step forward in our care and support for female seafarers. This helpline, along with our dedicated female peer support, allows them to lean on other women who understand what they are going through.”
