Background

The Government has announced a consultation on new measures to strengthen protections for seafarers working on regular services between the UK, France and the Channel Islands.

Proposals include extending the equivalent of the UK National Minimum Wage beyond territorial waters, and introducing clearer frameworks around working patterns and welfare. 

The Government has indicated its intention to review the Seafarer's Charter and consider whether elements should be placed on a mandatory footing following consultation.
