A Sea of Opportunities: The Making of a UK Merchant Navy Cadet - Trailer

The documentary offers an exclusive sneak peek into cadet training both at sea and ashore in the UK.

Produced by students at Solent Creatives and filmed at South Shields Marine School and aboard Gardline Limited’s fleet of offshore survey vessels, the documentary takes viewers behind the scenes to witness how cadets undergo both theoretical education and practical training, gaining the necessary skills to embark on successful careers in the maritime sector.

The Careers at Sea documentary explores the essential balance between academic training at shore-based institutions and the hands-on experience cadets receive while working aboard vessels.

As part of National Careers Week, the trailer release aims to inspire young people to find out more about the vast and rewarding career paths within the maritime industry. The documentary emphasises the significance of cadet training, which provides individuals with clear, structured pathways into a lifelong career.

Kathryn Neilson, Director of the Merchant Navy Training Board said;

We are excited to launch this documentary as part of our continued efforts to promote the many rewarding career opportunities within the maritime industry.

Through this documentary, the students at Solent Creatives have captured the experience of cadet training—both on land and at sea—and we hope it encourages a new generation to consider this pathway. We thank the Maritime Educational Foundation, South Shields Marine School and Gardline for their support with this project.

The full release date for A Sea of Opportunities: The Making of a UK Merchant Navy Cadet will be announced in the coming months.
