Member Insights | 25 Years of ORCA & Understanding the Ocean Shipping Depends On

For the shipping industry, the ocean is not just where we operate – it is fundamental to the movement of global trade and people, and to the growth of economies around the world. Therefore, understanding and protecting that environment is a shared responsibility, and one that continues to grow in importance as shipping navigates the future.

As our charity member ORCA (Organisation Cetacea) marks 25 years of whale and dolphin conservation, and following our collaboration to mark World Oceans Day, we sat down with Chief Operating Officer Steve Jones to explore why understanding the ocean matters to shipping, how attitudes towards conservation have evolved, and where the biggest opportunities for collaboration lie.

The conversation explores the growing relationship between shipping and conservation organisations such as ORCA, the importance of education and awareness at sea, and the opportunities for collaboration in the years ahead.

As ORCA celebrates its 25th anniversary, its work continues to highlight the importance of understanding the marine environment that shipping – and all of us – depend upon. To mark the milestone, ORCA is offering a range of free training and learning opportunities throughout June. While the anniversary programme comes to a close at the end of the month, ORCA's conservation, research and education work continues year-round.
