Celebrating the Career of Donna Stevens After 38 Years of Service

The Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) and the UK Chamber of Shipping proudly mark the retirement of our long standing colleague, Donna Stevens, after an exceptional 38 years of service. Since joining the organisation on 6 July 1987, Donna has been a constant source of expertise and integrity, guiding the MNTB and the wider industry through decades of change in seafarer training and education.

Colleagues describe Donna as the “backbone of the MNTB”, noting that she “has always had seafarers and the Board at her heart, providing many words of wisdom and corporate memory”. Her professionalism and dedication “have shaped not only the MNTB, but the many people who have had the privilege of working alongside her”. Others reflected on her quiet influence, saying she has been “an absolute force… someone whose impact runs through far more of our industry than she would ever take credit for”.

Neil Atkinson, Head of Fleetwood Nautical Campus, captured the feelings of many when he noted that Donna’s contribution has been “unique and unrivalled”.

Mark Bobby, Chair of the MNTB said:

Donna’s contribution to seafarer training stands apart. Her insight, her consistency, and her ability to bring clarity at crucial moments have shaped the MNTB more than she would ever say herself. Her work strengthened standards across our entire training landscape and supported countless colleagues along the way, Donna’s influence on the careers of industry professionals at all levels cannot be underestimated or appreciated enough. On behalf of everyone ‘past and present’ at the MNTB, I thank Donna for an exceptional 38 years of service and wish her every happiness in her well deserved retirement.

Kathryn Neilson, Director of the Merchant Navy Training Board, said:

Donna represents the very best of the Chamber and the MNTB. Her professionalism and deep commitment to seafarers have defined her career, and her legacy will continue to influence our work for years to come. We are enormously grateful for her exceptional dedication and we send her our warmest wishes as she begins her next chapter.

Donna’s impact is not only reflected in policy, standards and the continuity she provided; it is seen in the many careers she supported, the guidance she offered to colleagues at every level, and the high standards she set without ever seeking the spotlight. Her legacy will continue to strengthen the MNTB and the wider maritime industry long into the future.

We extend our sincere thanks to Donna for her remarkable service and wish her every happiness in retirement.
