Primary area of focus to encourage UK’s development of a fit-for-purpose regulatory framework to facilitate SMR nuclear power generation in the maritime sector as a potential national opportunity, its linkages to Industrial Strategy and other emerging technologies.

The UK Chamber of Shipping has published a major new report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr), confirming the UK’s position as one of the world’s most competitive maritime nations. The report introduces the Shipping Competitiveness Index, a ground-breaking international benchmark assessing 44 maritime countries that together represent over 80% of globally owned deadweight tonnage.

This week the nation marked Merchant Navy Day 2025 on 3 September. On this annual occasion, the UK Chamber of Shipping, along with our members and the wider industry, honours the dedication and service of British merchant seafarers, past and present, and their vital role at the heart of our industry and our economy.
