The Weekly Bulletin: Friday 09 December 2022

Welcome to this week’s Bulletin.

On Monday, the Chamber met with the new Maritime Minister to discuss priorities and key issues affecting the UK shipping industry. We touched on 2050 net-zero targets, investment in infrastructure, skills development and a vision in which the UK continues to be viewed as a competitive and attractive market for the maritime industry.

This week, we also welcomed a new silver sponsor for our Annual Dinner 2023 and published the British Tugowner Association Annual Safety Seminar 2022 report of proceedings. Further information can be found below.

What's New

Chamber meets new Maritime Minister

Earlier this week, the Chamber’s President Graham Westgarth and I met the new Maritime Minister, Baroness Vere.

At such an early stage in her time as Maritime Minister, this was a welcome opportunity to brief the Minister on key issues for the shipping industry. These included the importance of clear targets and strategies on decarbonisation and ensuring we have the skills the sector needs in the years ahead.

The Chamber is currently working on engagement opportunities for the Minister in 2023 with the industry. This includes our annual dinner and visits to a port and nautical college. As more details become available we will keep members up to date.

ABS Announced as New Silver Sponsor

The Chamber is delighted to announce ABS group as the new silver sponsor for the Annual Dinner 2023. The event will take place on Monday 6 February 2023, at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House, in London. Annual Dinner tickets are available to purchase.

ABS Group works alongside its partners to tackle operational and regulatory challenges so the marine and offshore industries can operate safely, securely and responsibly.

Commenting on the announcement, the Chamber's Head of Membership and Business Development, Tony Jerome said:

"We are pleased to see ABS group becoming our sixth sponsor for the annual dinner, it demonstrates a continued willingness to partner with the UK Chamber of Shipping as well as trust in our day-to-day work.

“Each of our sponsors brings with them their invaluable expertise and unique views on shipping matters that help us ensure this sector stays strong and continues to thrive in the years ahead.”

BTA Annual Safety Seminar 2022

Last month, we held the British Tugowner Association Annual Safety Seminar in Edinburgh, with the intent of driving safety progress. A lot of focus was placed around methods and equipment needed to rescue people in the water.

The Chamber has produced a report of proceedings that analyses the topics discussed in depth. Here, you can also find guest speaker presentations to help you find out more about the people, ideas and businesses showcased during the day.

Seafarers Documentary Film

We all know about the challenges facing the recruitment of Seafarers globally. Therefore, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is planning to produce a 7-minute film focusing on the world of seafaring and encouraging people to pursue it as a career path.

They are calling for seafarers around the world, on all ships, to film themselves and their colleagues on their camera phones and submit this footage for the documentary. There is a full technical brief where you can find out more about the location, lighting, audio and other instructions.

An example of questions to be answered during the shooting are:

• Tell us your name and which country you are from

• What do you enjoy about your job?

• What do you find challenging about your job?

• Why would you recommend your job to others?

If this is of interest to you or any seafarers in your company you have time until 10 February 2023 to submit your video.
