The Weekly Bulletin: 27th May

This week Maritime Minister Robert Courts announced £12m funding for the 2nd round of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition to accelerate R&D of zero emission maritime technology.  Compared with the £206 million allocated to UK SHORE over the next 3 years this seems to be a “proverbial drop in the ocean” and we have asked for greater clarity in how these funds will be disbursed.  It is anticipated that this will be made clear as the Clean Maritime Plan is refreshed and we have been lobbying hard that the short notice announcements last year and this week do not help the industry in their own planning.  The Government do understand the industry commitment to decarbonisation, but we do need to see more transparency in their thinking and more alignment in how we deliver our collective aim. To that end, we are looking forward to working closely with the government and the UK SHORE to secure further funding opportunities for the industry. Read more here

The consultation on the proposed Seafarer’s Remuneration Bill remains open and we have been exploring ideas and concepts with members and DfT.  It is a complex area where international commitments, social provision and commercial interests inevitably overlap.  Our view is that these proposals are problematical for ports and shipping and are being rushed and more time is going to be required to ensure that full consideration is given to potential impacts as well as international alignment. We will be asking HMG to extend the consultation. In the meantime we have a long way to go to determine a UK Chamber position and we are grateful to members for their input.  There is much work to be done as there is a significant diversity in opinion.
