Transport Minister Norman Baker this week announced the impending UK ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC) at a preview reception of the London International Shipping Week.

Speaking at the event, Mr Baker said:

“It has always been the intention that the UK would ratify the Maritime Labour Convention and I am pleased to inform you that our ratification is expected to be formalised next week by the International Labour Organization.”

The reception comes 6 weeks before the inaugural London International Shipping Week, which will see the leaders of the global industry come to London to see what the UK has to offer their business.

In his speech, Mr Baker highlighted the importance of shipping to the UK economy and championed the opportunities provided by the week. He said:

“We know the UK has a lot to offer the global shipping community. Put simply, it is a great place to do maritime business.”
