Merchant Navy Training Board Centre Recognition Scheme gathers pace
The Merchant Navy Training Board has formally recognised two maritime training centres, as its bid to raise global maritime training standards takes hold, including one based in Philippines.
The Centre Recognition and Course Recognition accolades were developed last year to provide an independent assessment of maritime training around the world.
For Kathryn Neilson, Director of the MNTB, it is high time such a programme was launched.
“Centre and Course Recognition is desperately needed to raise the standards of maritime training. We all know there are many great courses and educational centres around the world, but frankly there are many with a long way to go. We want to celebrate excellence and help improve centres that are not yet up to scratch.
“The MNTB is impartial and independent – and we have very high standards. When colleges and training centres are formally recognised by the MNTB then shipowners and future seafarers know they can have confidence that the quality of education is outstanding.”
The Recognition scheme was initially trialled in the United Kingdom, but recognition is now available to international training centres. Philcamsat, based in the Philippines, was awarded Centre Recognition for achieving the quality mark for the provision of gold standard seafarer training offered at their Training Centre in Manila.
Meanwhile Bachman Training – based in the UK - was awarded Course Recognition for the delivery of two of their electrical safety training courses.
Kathryn Neilson added:
“The process to achieve recognition is thorough and detailed, but also collaborative and collegiate. It begins with a formal application and initial assessment, before a full onsite evaluation assesses the training centre’s ability to meet industry needs and the highest of standards, whether they be academic or on practical issues such as safety.”
After onsite evaluation is complete, successful courses will be able to display the MNTB ‘quality mark’ on promotional materials and course stationery.
