Letter to new Maritime Minister

Dear Minister,

I would like to congratulate you on behalf of the UK Chamber of Shipping for your appointment as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport.

At the UK Chamber of Shipping we have built an excellent relationship with officials in your department, and we look forward to this continuing as we promote the great UK shipping industry.

In our election manifesto we highlighted 4 key themes we wanted the next government to prioritise:

  • Ensure the UK continues to be a world leading place to do business
  • Support the decarbonisation of the shipping industry
  • Help companies provide training schemes for those seeking a career at sea
  • Work with global partners to ensure frictionless trade

All of these issues are important to us and our members but tackling climate change and supporting the decarbonisation of the shipping industry is of paramount importance.  We want to see greater investment across the UK in research and development so we can lead the world in developing the technologies of tomorrow, creating a cleaner, greener global shipping industry and ensuring the UK remains a world leading maritime nation.

Clarity on our future trading arrangements is also of critical importance.  We want the government to prioritise and lead on developing and introducing a new ‘Maritime Chapter’ in bi-lateral and multilateral trade negotiations to maximise the opportunities for the UK’s international shipping services.  Any future UK EU trade agreement must also recognise the existing high degree of economic integration, safeguarding and promoting short sea shipping services on which this depends.

The UK tonnage tax regime has led to a renaissance in UK shipping since its introduction in 2000.  It is now due updating and improving to keep it competitive.  We are in close liaison with your officials following a review we conducted in 2018 and once we have new UK maritime guidelines in place we will be urging those changes be implemented.

Shipping is the backbone to communities across the UK and a thriving shipping industry is vital to the wider UK economy.  I welcome the opportunity to meet you at your earliest convenience to discuss how we advance our mutual interests in UK shipping.

Your sincerely

Bob Sanguinetti
