About: National Careers Week | 2-7 March

Where did you start your career? What influenced you? Did you know what you were looking for?

Every career pathway and journey is unique, with different adventures and experiences that all led to where you are now. This week, from 2-7 March 2020, is National Careers Week, run by a team of people who are passionate about sharing career guidance with young people across the UK. This year, like the last two, Careers at Sea is sponsoring the week to speak about career pathways in the Merchant Navy.

Throughout the week and particularly on our dedicated day #TidalTuesday, Careers at Sea will be posting, sharing and advising people on what the Merchant Navy is and the brilliant career opportunities that lie within it. Across a range of roles and responsibilities, Careers at Sea will guide people from interest to application. National Careers Week is a fantastic opportunity to shout about starting a career in the Merchant Navy.

Careers at Sea has a fantastic team of volunteers that speak about their own experiences in the Merchant Navy. Careers at Sea Ambassadors range from newly qualified Navigation (Deck) and Engineering/ETO Officers through to Ship Captains, Chief Engineers and shore-based professionals. Through this programme, young people across the UK can hear about the challenges, opportunities, unforgettable moments and daily life working at sea. What an inspiration for future seafarers!

You can help us to reach more. Here are three simple ways you can support Careers at Sea and help inspire the next generation of seafarers.

Become a Careers at Sea Ambassador

Have you worked or trained at sea at some point in your career? Join the team of 200 volunteers across the UK and speak about your own Merchant Navy pathway. Schools and youth groups want to hear your story - why not volunteer one hour of your year and attend a local school to let them know where their career pathway could take them? All the resources are provided, just add your unique journey.

Ship Owner? Offer a ship visit!

Imagine seeing a ship for the first time. Stepping on board and experiencing what it’s like to stand on the bridge, look over the deck and getting an insight into all the activity that goes on day-to-day. Giving a school or youth group the opportunity to see what it’s like on board a Merchant Navy ship can be an incredible source of inspiration.
